TAO AND TAICHI

What is Tao? The Chinese practiced it for thousands of years yet still feel the inadequacy of putting it into words. From philosophy, government, medicine, and martial arts, to even cooking, Tao is in every aspect of life. As the opening of Tao te ching (the classic of Taoism) says: “The Tao that can be explained is not the everlasting Tao.” Let us experience it through practicing the 24-movement Tai chi chuan (or the Ultimate Extreme Shadow Boxing). We will read one or two chapters of Tao te ching at the beginning of each practice and proceed with  two to four new movements each time.

The softest thing in the universe
Overcomes the hardest thing in the universe.
That without substance can enter where there is no room.
Knowing others is wisdom;
Knowing the self is enlightenment.
Mastering others requires force;
Mastering the self needs strength.
(Tao te ching chs. 43 & 33)

This is not a martial arts class nor a pursuit of mystic experiences.  Instead, we use Tai chi chuan to explore and comprehend what is said in the ancient Taoist text.  Wear comfortable clothes and thick socks for practice.
